Skatepark Design

"Skaters by their very nature are urban guerillas: they make everyday use of the useless artifacts of the technological burden, and employ the handiwork of the government/corporate structure in a thousand ways that the original architects could never dream of"

Craig Stecyk, 1976

Below are a few examples of skatepark design plans, including a visualisation reel from Maverick Industries U.K that I particularly enjoyed. I have become more interested in how a park is designed and constructed; previously forgetting how closely related it can be to Landscape Architecture. I have been skateboarding for nearly 7 years, and I find that many skateparks are designed by those who have inferior knowledge in order to create a detailed peice of design that will satisfy the needs of a keen skatepark enthusiast. Many so called designers do not know what ingredients make up a perfect skatepark. Over summer I will look into this in detail by producing a series of construction drawings and concept diagrams which will look at what I feel are park imperfections, supported with a range of precedents. It is important to try and resolve any imperfections in a certain skatepark element (rails, boxes, ramps etc), making the discipline an extremely complicated and detailed area of design.
